We need clean air for sake of public health – Yorkshire Post Letters

AS a resident off the A660 in the proposed Clean Air Zone area for Leeds (The Yorkshire Post, August 21), the improvement in air quality since March has been very clearly observed and welcomed.

However, I am deeply concerned that the noticeable improvements to air quality made during lockdown are unlikely to be sustained as life returns to normal.

Improvements in some vehicles, such as buses and taxis, has only been achieved due to the CAZ being on the horizon and this achievement can be undone if the project is withdrawn. I have written to the Secretary of State asking him to re-affirm his commitment to the project. If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it has been the responsibility that we have to public health. Leeds needs its Clean Air Zone.

ANOTHER bad day for the environment – the Leeds Clean Air Zone put on hold at the same time a new round of fare increases are announced on the region’s railways without any sign of measures to improve accountability.

Just how bad do things have to get before the Government realises that the climate crisis is an immediate one?
