We should win at Olympics

From: Terry Duncan, Greame Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

Is it really necessary for the BBC to close down its normal transmissions on BBC1 and BBC2, to sate the appetites of the London Circus of clowns and jugglers, led by Boris and Seb?

They constantly fool us that the whole of Great Britain will “win” at the Olympics, when in fact, at the end of the day, the main beneficiaries will be the money men in the City, and not the taxpayer forced to contribute through their wage packets in these dire times.

However, the hundreds of athletes who have striven through their years of Olympian efforts to get to this stage of achievement all deserve a medal and the applause of their countries.

So, it seems to me, not one penny of profits from the Olympic effort, be centred on the money men of London, but should be returned to the UK taxpayer, as should the BBC stay with normal BBC1 and BBC2 services throughout the event.

The latter have several other channels they can use, and hopefully it will cover, after the flame dies out, with as great vigour, the analyses of all the money the Olympics will have cost Britain.

Marriages blessed by God

From Brian Sheridan, Redmires Road, Sheffield,.

The humility and candour of Archbishop John Sentamu’s piece “Why I can never back the right to same-sex marriage” (Yorkshire Post, May 18) is typical of this extraordinarily good man who is a colossus of the Church of England.

However, in eschewing the dogma and blind rhetoric of some of his lesser allies, his temporal argument misses the main point, which is a religious one.

Many homosexuals believe in God and some would like their union to have God’s blessing.

Which is not what motivates many straight couples who just want the splurge of a church ceremony.
