THE article (The Yorkshire Post, August 22) about possible contenders lining up to be West Yorkshire’s first elected metro mayor made for depressing reading.

The last thing that we need is a political animal in this role. Far better for an effective high-profile business leader to take the reins.

Unfortunately, the political candidates will have slick, money-backed party machines behind them which could make all the difference.

JUST look at the candidates to be West Yorkshire’s first metro mayor fills me with total
apathy.

Contrast the list with the calibre of current incumbents in Manchester and the West Midlands.

As for Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe who presides over Bradford, a city in terminal decline, how pompous can she get? “As a leader...I have a place to run and a virus to beat.”

On both counts she is failing. Finally, the consultation delivered 4,000 responses; how can this be termed a success given the population of West Yorkshire?
