Whitby and Scarborough count cost of ‘Covid’ tourists – Yorkshire Post Letters

OVER the years the police have been castigated for their attitudes towards the victims of crime. I find it sad that the authorities are taking the same attitude over the spike in coronavirus in Whitby and Scarborough.

Huge numbers of strangers fell upon both towns, had a good time, went home full of fish and chips and beer, and left both infected.

We are now told we must stop mixing households and remember to Covid prevention guidelines. I would love to go to a tea party along with my elderly neighbours, but only if we could celebrate the departure of those so out of touch with reality.

SO Shipley MP Philip Davies and his new wife Esther McVey MP criticise the Government for another lockdown. None of us want one of course, but the reasons they give are appalling.

Money and business before lives is what they are saying. Of course action should have been taken much sooner, but we are now in a corner with no other option available.

WHY is everybody so fixated on having a “normal” Christmas? Nothing in this country has been normal for the past nine months so why change now?

If nothing else, “Eat out to help out” and the return of students to universities showed us that increased social contact leads to an increase in Covid infection rates and a return to restrictions.

Why cannot people show a bit of patience? With a credible vaccine possibly only two months away, it seems grossly irresponsible to risk a further spike in infections for the sake of a couple of days of self-indulgent festivities.

THE Chancellor says there is no money tree so there can be no wage increases in the public sector. Strange how MPs are receiving a pay increase as they, too, are public sector employees. Nice to see we’re still all in this together.
