I WANT to take this opportunity as Mayor of Whitby and on behalf of Whitby Town Council to thank everyone in the community for the way you are tackling the Covid-19 crisis.

You are showing, and continue to show, true spirit by staying at home and supporting each other with practicality and kindness.

As a town we feel a deep sense of gratitude towards the National Health Service, the emergency services and all key workers – carers, retail workers, postal workers, refuse collectors, people delivering food and the very many more of those who go out daily to do their jobs and help us all.

This gratitude binds us together. The response of individuals and local organisations has been outstanding.

The love and care given to each other – the well, the ill and the vulnerable – is an absolute tribute to everyone.

I am proud to be the mayor and have never been more proud due to the way everyone is pulling together.

Whitby is a special place and the people who live here are proving how special they are. Keep going, Whitby!

From: Barry Foster, High Stakesby, Whitby.

I AM fortunate to live in Whitby, mainly a healthy tourism town and area.

We are blessed with excellent hotels and B&Bs who at present are striving to maintain an existence.

If I am correct, we now learn that second homeowners are to be given assistance by the Government.

Surely they can afford to look after their properties themselves having had sufficient money to buy them in the first instance?

Additionally, most of them are rented as holiday lets most of the time.

This seems to me most unfair when all the hotels etc have to go it alone.

Perhaps we ought to be told by the Government where all this money is to come from?

From: ME Wright, Harrogate.

MAY I join our readers in looking forward to Whitby and the Dales when lockdown is over (The Yorkshire Post, April 30).

I would normally be taking the 36 to Ripon for market day and a lunchtime concert at the cathedral. Being deprived of that and Appleton’s pork pies is proving far more stressful than giving up smoking!

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.

Almost certainly you are here because you value the quality and the integrity of the journalism produced by The Yorkshire Post’s journalists - almost all of which live alongside you in Yorkshire, spending the wages they earn with Yorkshire businesses - who last year took this title to the industry watchdog’s Most Trusted Newspaper in Britain accolade.

And that is why I must make an urgent request of you: as advertising revenue declines, your support becomes evermore crucial to the maintenance of the journalistic standards expected of The Yorkshire Post. If you can, safely, please buy a paper or take up a subscription. We want to continue to make you proud of Yorkshire’s National Newspaper but we are going to need your help.

Postal subscription copies can be ordered by calling 0330 4030066 or by emailing [email protected]. Vouchers, to be exchanged at retail sales outlets - our newsagents need you, too - can be subscribed to by contacting subscriptions on 0330 1235950 or by visiting www.localsubsplus.co.uk where you should select  The Yorkshire Post from the list of titles available.

If you want to help right now, download our tablet app from the App / Play Stores. Every contribution you make helps to provide this county with the best regional journalism in the country.

Sincerely. Thank you.
