Whitehall putting a spoke in Yorkshire’s wheel

From: AW Clarke, Wold Croft, Sutton on Derwent, East Yorkshire.

Reading your front page report (Yorkshire Post, August 3) left me incandescent with rage. Are we, in the North, part of this country or are we a convenient adjunct suitable only for “fracking” and heavy industry?

We hear that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport along with UK Sport (a quango!) are doing their best to sabotage the tourism opportunities for Yorkshire by advising that funding support should not be offered due to their lack of confidence in Welcome to Yorkshire’s leadership of the event.

Could this be because their chosen bid to bring the Grand Départ to Scotland just prior to the Scottish referendum (surprise!) failed? Evidently the organisers of the Tour de France are confident that the event will be a success.

One can perhaps understand that UK Sport and VisitEngland may feel they want a finger in
the pie but it is unforgivable
that the Department of
Culture, Media and Sport
should take sides in this, or
don’t they represent the whole country?

I hope that many of your readers can be persuaded to write to the MPs over this matter, as I have done, and let them know how fed up we are with an administration which evidently regards us as having nothing to offer to visitors to our beautiful county.

Following the controversy regarding the Grand Départ, in the interests of accuracy and no doubt political correctness, perhaps UK Sport should re-name itself South of Watford Sport.
