Who feels 
an allegiance 
to the EU?

IT has never been mentioned that the EU is not a country. It is an agglomeration of 28 different countries with 28 different languages and cultures.

It can never be a country that allegiance can be paid to.

Who would ask a soldier to die for a group of bureaucrats in Brussels?

Also immigrants to a country do not pledge allegiance to their new country, they will always retain their original loyalty.

The EU produces nothing but rules and regulations from bureaucrats to justify their own existence, they do nothing we could not do ourselves.

The idea behind the EU is to create a full socialist state of Europe without interference from its citizens.

No one is allowed to change the rules, something forgotten or ignored by our politicians, without first invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – a process which would take two years.

Our leaders seem to have lost the power to make tough decisions.

We have to leave this crazy set-up which costs £50m per day to be in.

We can then trade with the world again without restriction or dictatorship.

AS we are now seeing (The Yorkshire Post, May 19), Nigel Farage has had to tape the mouths of Ed Miliband, David Cameron and Nick Clegg. One has to wonder why, as the venom that comes from the Ukip leader’s mouth is hardly worth listening to.

As we all know, talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words and cost money.

As we in the North have very little money, or so our councils tell us, how will Nigel perform his miracles upon Europe and immigration?

Could I remind Nigel that immigration to this country of ours has generally brought success and wealth to the 
nation.

One of our finest, if not the finest Britons, was Isambard Kingdom Brunel – the great engineer’s father was French – not to mention many butchers, bakers and even candlestick makers.

In recent years we have 
seen immigrants buying into 
and running successfully 
our ailing industries, engineering, clothing, supermarkets and even football clubs, where many of the 
players are immigrants who 
earn thousands of pounds a week.

Have they come for the 
welfare benefits or do they pay into the system?

Nigel has gagged “hear all”, 
“see all” and “say nowt” but will he be the one to eat all, sup all and pay nowt?

WITH regard to yesterday’s elections, I find it amazing 
that politicians can trust us to vote for them, but cannot trust us to have a vote on whether we stay in the European Union which we never voted to go 
in to.

As we all understood it, we were in an European Trade agreement, but now find ourselves governed by Brussels. Why are we not allowed a vote on Europe, and if not, then why do we need the British Parliament?

“I WANT Britain to be a part of Europe for peace and friends” – famous words from the late Sir Winston Churchill after the Second World War.

There was one good statement from Nigel Farage, the Ukip leader.

He said, and I totally agree, that all the border boundaries in Europe should be brought back and tightened up.

As an old Boy Scout I still remember the fourth Scout law. “A Scout is a friend to all, and a brother to every Scout, no matter what country, class or creed the other may belong.”

Bus company falls short

YOU expect small, local bus firms serving rural areas to be friendly and helpful. You would be sorely disappointed with Reliance of York, however. Despite 80 years of local service, they can’t even get the basics right.

I recently asked for the company’s day ticket because I was making many journeys.

The driver looked totally bemused and looked on his machine for it.

This made me doubt the ticket’s existence so I retrieved the bus leaflet and showed him where it clearly stated a day ticket was available.

Then he told me that he had not been trained to use the ticket machine. And that the bus was already late. What did he expect me to do about both of these things, neither of which were my fault?

I was beginning to think that my whole day’s travel plans were in tatters so I politely asked if there was someone he could ring.

Following a call to the owner, he pressed two buttons and there it was clearly stated “Adult Day” – it was there all along.

So, after five minutes of discomfort due to this driver’s incompetence, he simply said “Ta”, without so much as a hint of an apology.

Incredibly, I wanted to buy Reliance’s most expensive ticket at £8 and they very nearly lost my custom.

People criticise the large bus companies but I have not come across customer service as poor as this.

I contacted Reliance about this incident and owner John Duff made no apology at all. All he did was make excuses for this driver’s obvious weaknesses.
