Why bail out a sinking ship?

From: Dorothy Colne, Beckwithshaw. Harrogate.

THE only sensible thing Gordon Brown did, all the time he was Prime Minister, was to keep the UK out of the euro.

While his left hand was doing this, we now hear his right hand, Chancellor Darling, was signing up an agreement that we would help bail out any other member country that got into difficulties with the euro (Yorkshire Post, April 8).

These countries who were foolish enough to join up have had EU money poured into them without making any contingency plans, much of it money the UK has paid into the EU. First Greece, the Ireland and now Portugal.

I fully agree with Dick Lindley’s letter (Yorkshire Post, April 12). The sooner we leave the sinking ship the better.

Free to protest

From: JW Buckley, Aketon, Pontefract.

AN excellent letter from Gerald O’Callaghan (Yorkshire Post, March 25) on Brian Haw’s liberty to protest in Parliament Square.

Brian Haw’s presence there is an indicator of the strength of our democracy. If he is removed, then we shall all be the poorer, and people like Gerald O’Callaghan, your contributors, reporters and editors will need to work that bit harder to make sure that free speech thrives.

I do hope he is there for the Royal wedding, and our political leaders would enhance their reputations to go on that day in particular, and shake him by the hand; telling him that his commitment to democracy is an example to us all.

Under attack

From: Colin Challen, St Sepulchre Street, Scarborough.

I WAS pleased to read of Nick Clegg’s openness about his hurt over the personal attacks he has suffered. This surely sends a signal to all his desperate local council candidates that their personal attacks on their opponents are unwarranted and unpleasant. Sadly such behaviour has been a Lib Dem trademark in local politics.
