IS Christmas worth the risk of infection by coronavirus (Jayne Dowle, The Yorkshire Post, December 17)?

The short answer is in the negative. Real Christians can celebrate the birth of Christ in the privacy of their own homes or on a Zoom service with the church. Most of the other celebrations have little to do with Christ, merely being an opportunity to exchange gifts and eat and drink too much.

Yes, I am aware it is an important festival, but there are many who have little real idea of its true meaning who would vociferously object to the cancellation of it.

INTERESTING to read (The Yorkshire Post, December 15) that apathy is an early symptom of dementia. I wonder if researchers are looking at the affect of coronavirus on the development of dementia?

Many, in particular those living alone, are becoming apathetic because of the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of this virus.

Early interventions such as teaching people to Zoom with friends and relatives, encouraging a new activity or language could possibly help delay the onset of this horrific illness, which blights many lives.

THE Government’s mantra “Save the NHS” is beginning to wear thin. Apparently there are more spare beds in some hospitals now than this time last year.

So why are patients in desperate need of treatment being sidelined?

What are their respective consultants doing in the meantime?

From: Judy Goodwin, Wakefield.

I WONDER if, when politicians have stopped their obsession with a disease that has a 99 per cent recovery rate, an inquiry will be held.

Not only to look into the fiscal damage that will take a generation to recover but also the physical damage to people who have died from heart disease and cancer, all because their treatment and diagnoses was put on the back burner as all things Covid took priority.

I wonder if politicians will apologise to their families and if Boris Johnson will hold his hand up and say the buck stops with him.

From: Terry Palmer, Hoyland, Barnsley.

WE are now a total nanny state where people like Sir Keir Starmer love to control people with their idiotic left-leaning Marxist policies (The Yorkshire Post, December 17).

The majority of mature citizens of our country are not stupid.

Most will do what is right to protect themselves, their families and the vulnerable, and not just at Christmas.

Of course, as ever, we have yet to hear what Sir Keir – or the “smarmy lawyer” as
some describe him – would actually do.
