Your Letter To America confirms why I left land of Donald Trump for Yorkshire

As someone who has recently returned to live in Yorkshire after 33 years spent in New York and Chicago your ‘Dear America…’ piece (The Yorkshire Post, April 20) articulated my feelings on the subject so well.

I forwarded the article to my stepson back there who appreciated it very much and agreed that it summed-up his feelings also. I have found British perspectives on Trump vary greatly given that, for many, he is the ‘great white hope’ for the future of a post-Brexit Britain, while others here do seem to be aware of the existential threat he poses to people everywhere. He and his policies are a huge part of the reason I chose to return to the UK in August of last year.

THE central tenet of your open letter seems to be that President Trump’s inadequate stewardship has resulted in America suffering a worse outcome of the coronavirus pandemic than any other country. But it is not proven.

Whilst it is true that America, with 30,000 deaths, has the highest number recorded, their population is five times ours and their figure would be 80,000 if they replicated our position. So with what moral authority do you attack him? And why haven’t you addressed similar letters to Italy, Spain and others?

I write not in support of President Trump but to deprecate your opportunistic journalism.

WITHOUT discussing the effects of the coronavirus emanating from China, isn’t this the time for the whole world to revaluate the deliberate policy of China over many years to crush manufacturing rivals?

They now have a monopoly on the manufacture of so many products as their goal is to become the world’s largest economy. As much as I disagree with many of President Trump’s policies, putting tariffs on Chinese imports is correct. I, for one, would pay more for locally-produced products.

CONGRATULATIONS on your ‘Open letter to America’. It says so much of what I feel about President Trump.

He is a president that the USA can be truly embarrassed and ashamed of, though they did elect him. They have the opportunity shortly to endorse that, or reject him. America deserves better.
