YP Letters: Cathedral city a delight except for the traffic

Hilary Andrews of Leeds (The Yorkshire Post, April 20) certainly gets about, recently making favourable comments about Ripon Cathedral being free to visit.

I was in Ripon for a visit to the wonderful Ripon Spa Gardens (a true oasis in the desert), with the excellent Wednesday Wheelers, based in York, that coincided with the Easter school half term. That would explain why Ripon centre appeared traffic grid-locked around lunch time.

I am sure many more free visits to the Cathedral would be made if it wasn’t for the amount of vehicles whose drivers attempted to make sense of the one way streets and apparent lack of parking. Does everyone have to arrive by car?

It was a delight to thread our way, from one side of the relatively small city centre, to the Spa Gardens and especially gratifying to see so many children enjoying the gardens with their parents and grandparents.

A few hours away from 
their homes and the computer screen and the latest technology proved once again that there is no substitute for the great outdoors.

The friendly service offered by the catering staff at the tea pavilion made for an excellent two hours visit for cyclists and none cyclists alike.
