Regarding the furore about the salaries paid to the so-called stars of the BBC, I must say that I agree entirely with the comments in most newspapers that the women’s pay should be in line with that of the men, but my view is that the ridiculously high salaries should be rounded down to that of the women. How someone would pay a disc jockey more than £2m a year for, basically, playing records and uttering banal comments is beyond me. Only at the BBC!

From: J Hutchinson, York.

I AM not of the opinion that the women at the BBC are paid too little but that the men are paid far too much.

With the exception of the wonderful war reporters, these pampered presenters and actors have very little responsibility in the important things that could change the lives of people in the UK.

Why not get rid of all the big earners and recruit fresh new talent with salaries that have a ceiling of £100,000. After all, this is more than enough for anyone to have a very comfortable life.

If, after reaching this sum they decide to jump ship, then recruit again. This would keep the BBC fresh and alert, also free up money for new programmes and restrict the interminable repeats.
