YP Letters: Stick to the facts on the referendum

From: Mr Christie, Swanland Road, Helmsley.
Voters want politicians to stick to facts over the referendum. (PA).Voters want politicians to stick to facts over the referendum. (PA).
Voters want politicians to stick to facts over the referendum. (PA).

Once again (The Yorkshire Post, April 19) John Cole, the Remainers propaganda correspondent, peddles his untruths about the referendum and he must be exposed.

Firstly, the referendum was not “advisory”. Secondly, the margin of victory for the Leavers (over one million) was not “narrow”. Please stick to the facts and do not encourage these misstatements.

From: Michael Green, Tingley, Wakefield.

Sadly, in Paris, another murderous attack on EU citizens going about their lawful business. No doubt it will be followed, once again, by the authorities insisting that nothing should be done to interfere with the uncontrolled movement of people across borders.

How soon before citizens of EU countries decide, through the ballot box, that they are no longer prepared to take the risk of being future murder victims, in the cause of a failed political ideal?

If the authorities do not act quickly and effectively, we are likely to see a serious upsurge in right-wing extremism, which most of us would find just as unacceptable as the present tragic situation. And they will have brought it on themselves – and on us.

From: Jack Brown, Monk Bretton, Barnsley.

Bernard Ingham (The Yorkshire Post, April 19) reveals either his political ignorance or his irrational partisanship when he says that UKIP’s job is finished. Unless there is a sea-change at the General Election, the risk of a Commons vote against the terms negotiated by the forthcoming Conservative Government remains.

There is no possibility of a Conservative win in previously safe Labour seats such as Barnsley’s three which voted Brexit overwhelmingly. The choice is between Labour and UKIP and Ingham does Theresa May no favours by suggesting otherwise.

Should I give up day job?

From: Roger Whitaker, Hardwick Road, Pontefract.

I always enjoy reading The Yorkshire Post magazine, especially Ian McMillan’s contributions. Having read his utterings in the April 22 edition, about advertising slogans, as he suggested, it gave me an idea to have a go and make up your own and at the same time perhaps bring a bit of humour and light relief into the letters columns. So here goes.

When you no longer need Pepsodent you’ll have to change to Sterodent. Or... Use BP for more mpg. I suppose it should be kmpl, (Kilometres per litre) but that doesn’t rhyme so I will stick to mpg.

Having got well into this slogan business, I then invented my own wastepipe cleaner. It will be a nice pink colour and called Pink and sold with the slogan “A stink in the sink will vanish in a wink with Pink”.

Ian, will I be able to make my fortune writing advertising slogans or should I keep to my day job, or in my case retirement pension? Whatever you think of my efforts, I will continue to enjoy reading yours.

EU staff make NHS function

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield.

Having just had a short stay in Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, I would like to make the following comments.

The staff at the hospital simply could not be faulted in the manner in which they cared for me throughout my stay and during the not-too-pleasant procedure I went through.

Mrs May must be very careful during the Brexit negotiations because, without the doctors, nurses and other staff from EU countries, the place would not be able to function.

There is also clearly far too much paperwork that has to be completed by the nursing staff which takes them away from actually caring for patients, although I strongly suspect that much of this is to protect the hospital from claims of failure in treatment. Perhaps if some thought was given to taking advice from the nursing staff as to what would improve the already high standard of care and make life better for them and enable them to take care of even more sick people.

Admit the red kite dangers

From: WB Stockdale, Burnsall, Skipton.

In answer to the letter (The Yorkshire Post, April 15), regarding the scarcity of curlew and lapwings. When are Mr Packham and his friends going to admit that red kites do take young ground nesting chicks.

There won’t be a successful lapwing or curlew brood get away within 10 miles of Harewood. Any farmer will tell the same. Will the RSPB stop being so blinkered or are they too biased to admit there are now too many red kites?

Fairer way for business rates

From: Jarvis Browning, York.

Would it not be fair to have the business rates valued on the percentage of the business turnover, rather than on the valuation of the property, whether it is rented or leasehold or freehold? This way surely would be fair for all?
