IF a breath of fresh air were needed in an environment as sweet as the Yorkshire Dales, the announcement of a contest to design a home for its future generations is it.

The crisis facing our National Parks is to find a model for preserving the villages within them as sustainable communities, not museums of the past.

This requires affordable homes which do not spoil the landscape yet which guarantee their occupants the facilities essential to modern life: transport, education, shops and communications.

The template approach taken by conventional householders may be appropriate to urban areas, but it does not necessarily suit the special requirements of the uplands. That’s why the involvement of the Royal Institute of British Architects in devising an alternative is so welcome.

A plot in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, with Pen-y-ghent as its backdrop, is to be the pilot for the project. We look forward to seeing the vision for its future.
