SIR Vince Cable, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, makes a powerful case in today’s newspaper for a new funding model so there’s closer correlation between NHS and social care.

He’s not the first politician to tackle this age-old question – a consensus has been building for many years and is given further impetus by today’s Age UK report into the extent to which newly-diagnosed dementia sufferers are denied follow-up care.

Not only does this harm their quality of life, but it has the potential to place the care system under
even greater strain at a
later date when their
health does deteriorate. Given this false economy, the wake-up call needs to be heeded before even more people are let down by a lack of joined-up care and common sense.
