Opposition calls for bridge to re-open at meeting

York’s Lendal Bridge could be reopened if calls by opposition councillors are supported at a crunch meeting.

York Council’s controversial six month trial closure was due to end in February but it has extended the restrictions until May as the council has yet to make a decision on whether the bridge should stay closed.

Coun Ann Reid, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for transport, will move a motion at tomorrow’s full council meeting calling on the restrictions to be lifted. “The latest figures show that the trial is still hitting residents and local businesses with congestion worsening across York and bus times actually increasing,” she said.

The Labour-run council has said the ban will help cut congestion and pollution.
