Opposition challenges ‘flawed’ decision to dump weekly bin collections

OPPOSITION councillors are challenging a decision to switch to fortnightly bin collections in Hull.

The city’s Cabinet confirmed the decision, due to come into effect next April, earlier this month in a move which will save £1 million, but will also cost jobs. In a questionnaire last year, 57 per cent of residents said they would back the switch from weekly to fortnightly household waste collections.

However Lib Dem group leader Abi Bell and Tory group leader John Fareham claim the decision was not made in an “open and transparent” way and not enough effort was made to look at alternative options.

Coun Bell said: “When the Cabinet took the decision not all the consultation results were presented as part of the report and from our point of view they made the decision from patchy information at best. People may have wanted the black bin collected fortnightly - what we didn’t know was how many people wanted the fortnightly blue bin (for dry recyclables) collected weekly.”

However council leader Steve Brady stood by the decision. He said: “There’s been no real reaction across the city. I know myself I only put my black bin out every three weeks. It saves £1m - to me that is one of the easier decisions we will have to make over the forthcoming months.”
