Origin information urged for diners

Restaurants, pubs and caterers could be required to tell diners which countries the food they serve comes from, the Government has suggested.

Farming Minister Jim Paice urged the hospitality industry to follow the lead of retailers who are increasingly labelling food products with their origin.

The call comes months after the food industry introduced voluntary country of origin labelling standards, an issue the Yorkshire Post campaigned for in order to stop food being labelled as British when it was not.

Mr Paice is now set to write to the British Hospitality Association asking it to advise its members to provide information about origin.

He said: “Origin labelling helps people make informed choices and gives assurances on quality, production methods, and environmental impact.

“Whether it’s on a label, menu, or given verbally, I want to see all of industry making every effort to provide this information.”
