The Osmond family's Leeds charity gala

Merrill and Jay Osmond will entertain alongside other showbiz names at the 6th annual Hearing Fund UK gala in New Dock Hall at the Royal Armouries from 7pm on Saturday.

The family set up the charity as an addition to Children’s Miracle Network, which was started by their late mother Olive.

The original Osmond Brothers band – of which lead singer Merrill and drummer Jay were members – was founded so that they could afford hearing aids for their deaf older siblings Virl and Tom.

Merrill’s son Justin was also born 90 per cent deaf, and founded The Hearing Fund UK after coming to Leeds as a Mormon missionary some years ago. The city has particularly high number of people who are hard of hearing, according the family.

Merrill, 64, told the YEP: “Jay and I have been working side-by-side together for 60 years. People often ask us why we keep going. It’s things like this.

“We’ve sang, we’ve danced, we’ve produced movies, we’ve produced TV. We’ve done all kinds of live events. Our lives are now focused in on things we can do to help people.”

He added that the UK is their “second home”.

The event on Saturday includes performances from comedian Brian Conley, ventriloquist Steve Hewlett, violin player Christopher Watkins and others. Audience members will also get a preview of Merrill and Jay’s new album of Vintage.

The various Osmond family acts – including Donny and Marie – have sold more than 100m records.
