Our boys get World Cup good luck message – from Captain England

The England football team was sent a special World Cup message yesterday – from Captain England.

It came from Capt Gary England, of 1st Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment, who was sending a message of good luck to the team in South Africa.

Addressing various TV cameras at the Imphal Barracks in York, he said: "I'm Captain England and I've got a message for the captain of England on behalf of the Yorkshire Regiment."

Then around 50 soldiers lifted aloft their regimental caps and started a deafening chant of "Come on England" while holding tightly on to a banner, in the team's colours, emblazoned with the same words.

Around 600 soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment were at the barracks taking part in a dress rehearsal for the presentation of new colours by the Duke of York today.

They have so far spent 56 hours, including three hours in the sweltering sunshine yesterday, going through the drills so they do not put a foot wrong on the big day.

After all their hard work comes to fruition today, they are sure

to be looking forward to relaxing and supporting England in their vital match against Algeria today.
