Out of the shadows... hopes grow for country job seekers

THE woods and forests of South Yorkshire have become a classroom for Susan Brown after she signed up for a new scheme which aims to help people to find jobs in the countryside.

Forestry Commission bosses have set up the project, which allows those taking part to become a “shadow ranger” following full-time rangers in their work and gaining experience.

According to the commission, printers and teachers are among those who have made a successful career change through the programme, which is currently on the lookout for new recruits.

Ms Brown, 35, from Wortley, near Barnsley, has a physics degree and a doctorate in oceanography from Edinburgh University and has recently worked on an organic farm near Inverness.

But she has now moved back to Yorkshire and said the volunteer shadow ranger scheme was ideal for her, because she had wanted to pursue a career in woodland management for some time.

She added: “Experience counts for a great deal and that’s why the shadow ranger programme is crucial.

“It’s been very varied and brings home how valuable our public woodlands are.”

Forestry Commission volunteer co-ordinator Amy Chandler added: “The shadow ranger scheme has been a big success and many of those who have taken part have gone onto to carve a new career for themselves.”
