Outbreak blamed on bean sprouts

An outbreak of salmonella was caused by contaminated bean sprouts, the Health Protection Agency confirmed today.

Microbiologists at the agency’s Centre for Infections confirmed the link between 141 cases of salmonella bareilly and bean sprouts reported since the beginning of August. Normally there are 10 cases of the strain each month.

Professor Qutub Syed said it had become increasingly clear there was a link.
