Outloook changeable as TV weatherman to become toad

HE'S known for his cheeky sense of humour as much as his outlook on the weather.

But no one could have forecast that Look North TV presenter Paul Hudson was about to be immortalised – in the shape of a giant toad.

The 39-year-old weatherman, who became mayor of Wetwang following the death of Countdown host Richard Whiteley, is one of two "celebritoads", along with ex-rugby league star Steve Prescott, being created for a massive outdoor art installation in Hull next month. The final design of the toad, which looks set to be sponsored by Welcome to Yorkshire, is being worked on.

In all 40 glass fibre sculptures covered in colourful artists' designs will be "released" onto the streets of the city on July 16 as part of events celebrating the poet Philip Larkin.

Some will appear in shopping centres and on the waterfront – while a "toad in the hole" may appear in excavated Beverley Gate.

Artist Helen Miller came up with a third celebrity-inspired design relating to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. But so far there have been no takers.

Called Splat, the red egg-covered toad recalls one of his most infamous moments.

Ms Miller wrote: "When I think of Hull, John Prescott immediately springs to mind and, in particular, his brush with an egg-throwing member of the public.

"Splat is a tribute to John Prescott and his strength of character in dealing with adversity – don't mess with John!"

Organisers say Lord Prescott's wife Pauline was approached at a literary lunch and said she didn't think her husband would object.
