With forthright views and a high media profile, Dr Liam Fox was never likely to be one of the coalition Government's shrinking violets.

He was a natural choice for Defence Secretary, having first-hand experience of army life as well as a long-standing opposition shadow.

But since taking up the position he has seemingly been engaged in an escalating battle with the Treasury over the budget.

The latest warning over the impact of “draconian” spending cuts follows a spat over paying for Trident, the UK’s nuclear deterrent.

Known for his polished manner and an ability to make headlines, the former GP is one of the best-known Conservative Party MPs.

Before becoming an MP, Dr Fox worked both in the NHS and as a Civilian Army Medical Officer. The 49-year-old was born and raised in East Kilbride, Scotland, and attended the local comprehensive school before going on to study medicine at Glasgow University.

After working as a GP in Somerset and Buckinghamshire, he successfully contested the rural Somerset seat of Woodspring in 1992.

The newly-elected MP soon became a polished Westminster performer rising quickly through the ranks.

His forthright views have got him into trouble before, such as when he said patients were at risk from the poor English of overseas doctors.
