Over 20 children hurt in school bus collision

TWENTY-three children were injured after a school bus collided with a bus which was not in service yesterday.

A spokesman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said a 999 call was received at 8.09am following a collision involving two buses at the junction of Stoney Lane with Grenville Walk, in Hall Green, near Wakefield.

Ambulance officers, a rapid response vehicle, nine ambulances and the Hazardous Area Response Team attended the scene where clinicians examined and treated the victims.

Twenty-three children aged between 12 and 15 were checked over and treated by ambulance staff at the scene.

None of the passengers was found to have life-threatening injuries.

Nine were taken to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, six suffering with neck pain, one with a shoulder injury and one with an ankle injury. One of the bus drivers, a man, was checked over at the scene and was also taken to Pinderfields.

Fourteen children with minor cuts and bruises, described as “walking wounded”, were taken to Dewsbury and District Hospital by two of the ambulance service’s non-emergency patient transport vehicles. In addition, 30 children with very minor injuries were discharged at the scene into the care of parents and guardians.

The remaining uninjured children were taken to school by minibus.

The road was closed but later reopened.
