Overdose kills traumatised Hillsborough survivor

A man traumatised after being crushed in the Hillsborough disaster took a fatal overdose days before the anniversary of the tragedy, an inquest heard.

Matthew Kaye was seven when he attended the match – where 96 Liverpool supporters died – with his father on April 15, 1989.

He was later diagnosed with chronic anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and became a heavy user of drugs and alcohol.

Truro Coroner’s Court heard Mr Kaye was found dead at a friend’s house in Cornwall, in the early hours of April 6 this year after taking a heroin overdose.

Cornwall coroner Emma Carlyon said there was no evidence of third party involvement, or that Mr Kaye intended to kill himself.

“Matthew Kaye was with a friend when he went into the toilet to inject heroin into his groin,” Dr Carlyon said.

“He felt the heroin was stronger than normal.

Shortly after, he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at 3.41am,” the doctor added.

“He was known to be a heavy drug user. The cause of death was heroin misuse.”

Toxicology tests showed Mr Kaye had high levels of heroin, methadone and alcohol in his system at the time of death, Dr Carlyon said.
