Overhaul of county’s ‘worst’ recycling local authority set to begin

A LONG-AWAITED overhaul of the district with North Yorkshire’s worst recycling rate is to begin in July, with 16,000 homes included in the first phase.

Harrogate Borough Council says the new system will be implemented from July 2.

It will involve a same day collection service for household waste and recycling brought in alongside a full bank holiday catch up collection and improved recycling facilities.

The council is providing wheelie bins for landfill waste and a second recycling box for plastic bottles and card.

It is also introducing a section on its website where residents can enter their post code to see full details of their waste collection service.

Harrogate Borough Council is the last local authority in North Yorkshire to move to this way of collecting household waste despite having the lowest recycling rate in the county.

In 2011, North Yorkshire County Council had to pay £9.1m in landfill tax for the amount of waste that had to be buried.

The cost of burying waste in landfill is rising for all local authorities.

The second phase of 30,000 homes and a third and final phase of 16,000 homes will be completed by the summer of 2013.
