Owls' fan in Icelandic challenge for hospital

A LIFELONG Sheffield Wednesday fan is set to take part in a 75km trek across Iceland this summer, to raise funds for The Children's Hospital Charity.

Steven Hall, 28, will start his six-day challenge in Reykjavik on August 15 before moving on to Landmannahellir and Alftavatn and then finishing in Stakkhotlsgja on August 21.

An administration team co-ordinator from Inkersall, Chesterfield, Mr Hall decided to take on the challenge after being inspired by the partnership between The Children's Hospital Charity and Sheffield Wednesday FC.

Day five of his trek will take him close to the Eyjafjallajkull glacier and volcano, which has been the cause of flight delays across the world due to its recent eruptions.

Mr Hall said: "I've done the British Heart Foundation's 17-mile High Peak challenge three times now and wanted something a bit more challenging to take on.

"Being a Sheffield Wednesday supporter, the link between the hospital and the Owls has raised my awareness of the charity and the amazing work that it does.

"I also have lots of friends whose children have benefited from having this fantastic hospital so close by."

As part of his training, Mr Hall has been taking part in long walks along the Trans Pennine Way and has recently completed the 34-mile round Chesterfield walk.

Cheryl Ridge, a fundraiser at The Children's Hospital Charity in Sheffield, said: "It's great to see the Sheffield Wednesday fans getting behind the work of the hospital and supporting their club in raising money for our young patients.

"It's a tough challenge that Steven has taken on and on behalf of everyone at the hospital and the charity I'd like to thank him for his support and wish him the best of luck!"

Sheffield Wednesday has given its shirt sponsorship to The Children's Hospital Charity and, following the Steel City derby match in April, the club raised 3,362 by selling signed players' shirts online.
