Own goal claim over meeting in meals row city

David Cameron was accused of scoring "a big own goal" by holding yesterday's cabinet meeting in Bradford – one of the areas where a pilot for free school meals has just been scrapped.

Labour leadership contender Ed Balls, the Shadow Education Secretary, seized on the decision after launching a campaign to save free meals.

"I hope they'll take the opportunity to explain to parents and teachers across Bradford why they're cutting funding for school meals which would have seen every child in the city get a free hot healthy lunch," said Mr Balls, MP for Morley and Outwood. "We know from when this has been tried elsewhere that it improves children's health, concentration and behaviour at school."
