Although there’s been no official confirmation, The Football Supporters’ Federation said the Football Association Council had voted 70 per cent to 30 per cent against the name change.

The decision - which follows the governing body rejecting a previous request in 2014 only for Hull to successfully have that verdict quashed - is likely to shape the club’s future for years to come.

The FSF described it as a victory for common sense.

A statement on their website said: “Great campaign by fans - their voice heard again, well done all!”

Owner Dr Assem Allam and son Ehab fervently believe rebranding would allow the Tigers to tap into the lucrative commercial markets of the Far East and Asia.

But the no camp have been determined to retain the club’s identity of well over a century and have their protest, chanting City Till We Die, on match day for the past two years.

Last April 63.5 per cent voted against.
