Pair jailed over dog attacks

Two men who used their dogs to savage police officers were each jailed for five years yesterday.

Mehmet Koc, 19, and Matthew Joannou, 20, both from Haringey, north London, let the pitbull-type animals viciously maul two victims who were left with permanent scarring.

Passing sentence at Wood Green Crown Court, Judge Simon Carr said the attack was an "inevitable escalation" of owning an aggressive dog.

Pc Scott Tiffin suffered "absolutely horrific" injuries in the attack on September 1 last year.

Two officers in a patrol car tried to stop the pair in the New River Estate, Haringey, only for Pc Mark Feasey to be savaged.

Koc and Joannou, both of Haringey, each admitted causing grievous

bodily harm, unlawful wounding and two counts of having a dog dangerously out of control.

They were banned from keeping dogs for 10 years.
