Park and rise... amphitheatre and arboretum take shape

WORK on a new amphitheatre and arboretum on a hillside above Sheffield railway station is nearing completion as part of a scheme to provide a new public park.

Sheffield Council has named the area, which lies below Park Hill flats, Sheaf Valley Park and specialists have planted 112 trees alongside the newly created event space which is made up of 12 sandstone steps.

One of the species being planted is sessile oak, which has been chosen because it was the dominant species on the site before it was developed for housing.

Other work on the project has included new steel steps which will connect the rail station with nearby Shrewsbury Road and the Norfolk Park area of the city.

A residents’ group was set up to take part in the planning of the park and has helped oversee the development.

Council director of housing, enterprise and regeneration Derek Martin said: “Sheaf Valley Park is shaping up to be one of the most exciting, versatile and beautiful outdoor spaces in the city, and it’s fantastic to see these latest additions.

“The council would like thank South Yorkshire Forest’s the Gift that Grows programme for funding these beautiful trees.”

The park has been funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
