Park to be venue for third Pride festival

ENDCLIFFE Park is set to host the third annual Sheffield Pride festival in June, it was announced yesterday.

The festival, on Saturday, June 26, will involve attractions including a stage show, a beer tent, stalls and a children's area.

Nik King, chairman of the Pride committee, said: "We've been working hard over Christmas to get as much sorted for Sheffield Pride 2010.

"With the date and venue confirmed, we are now looking to fundraising events and sponsorship.

"So, if you have any wacky ideas of how we can raise more money for Sheffield Pride, why not contact the Pride committee on [email protected]."

Sheffield Pride, which last year attracted more than 5,500 revellers, is one of the biggest live music events for South Yorkshire's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community.

It has also been nominated for the Best Festival section of the "Exposed" awards.

David Baker, PR and communications officer for Sheffield Pride, said: "The committee would like to thank everyone who voted for Sheffield Pride at the Exposed awards.

"It would be amazing to win but just being nominated reminds us why we work so hard throughout the year to create a Pride event because it makes an impact on people's lives."

Meanwhile, Doncaster's Pride festival is set to go ahead at the town's racecourse on August 21, despite mayor Peter Davies saying he would cut funding for the event when he was elected.

Last year's march through the streets of the town and the concerts which followed it attracted more than 8,000 people, and chairman of the organising committee, Trevor Jones, said the move was exciting.

He added: "It gives us the chance to develop and grow our event in what has to be one of the most prestigious event venues of any Pride in the UK.

"The potential this moves gives us is staggering. We have so many ideas and such a huge space to fill that this really is going to be something extra-special."
