Park illuminated by solar lighting

The new lights in Savile Park, Castleford, will enable people to use the facilities for longer over the winter months by providing illumination along the main pathway from the pedestrian entrance up to the bowling green, community building and games area.

Wakefield Council worked closely with the Friends of Savile Park to secure a £24,000 grant for the scheme,

Coun Maureen Cummings, the council’s cabinet member for the environment and communities, said: “This lighting has made a big difference to the park, making it a safer and more welcoming place to visit as well as being low cost and energy efficient.”

Officials say the lighting is low maintenance and reliable with no electricity bills.

Each streetlight is timed to go out at 9pm and has been fitted with an anti-climb collar to deter vandals.

The project has been financed by WREN, a not for profit business that awards grants to community projects from funds donated by FCC Environment to the Landfill Communities Fund, and the council.
