The 30-year-old from Normanton joined the TA as a signaller five years ago into a squadron known for being both elite and one of the most physically and mentally demanding in the Army. 299 Para Squadron is the only TA parachute trained Royal Engineer squadron in the UK.

Sapper Day said: “I enjoy my job, but I’ve always been attracted to Army life - doing something completely different from my civilian career.”

His unit has announced a recruitment drive to encourage more people to join up.

He added: “The TA is a great way for anyone wanting to add a bit of action into their life. It adds to your skills and ultimately makes you more employable through gaining team-building and leadership qualities. It also improves your fitness. Many of us live quite sedentary lives, especially in an office environment, but the TA gives you the chance to keep on your toes and get active.

“Even though a lot of my spare time is filled with TA activities, I find that my training has helped me become more focused in my regular job. I think on my feet much more now and find that I cope better under pressure.”

An open day for all is being held on Saturday, October 29, from 10-3 at the TA centre, George Street, Wakefield.
