Part-time workers wanted as maize maze gets ready for summer visitors

GROWTH may have taken a little longer than usual in the dry weather – but the recent rain has caused a popular East Riding attraction to put on a spurt.

Beverley Maze is grown from 60,000 maize seedlings which, at this time of the year, can grow as much as two inches a day.

The attraction, now in its second year, opens on July 23 and its owners are holding an open day this weekend to try to recruit 20 staff for a variety of roles.

Informal interviews will take place at the Maze site just off the A164, at Park Farm, Risby, near Beverley from 10am tomorrow.

This year’s theme is “Bee a Hero” and once the maize has grown to 1m, the bee shape will be cut out using GPS satellite technology that steers a tractor around the course and cuts the maize to the ground.

At the end of the season, the remaining maze will be harvested and used as animal feed for a local dairy farmer.

Last year, 10,000 visitors came to see the Maze from as far afield as Dublin and Hertfordshire.

Owner and farmer John Clappison said: “It was a little bit backward but it has certainly made up ground with the nice sunny weather and rain of late.

“Maize is a sun-loving plant and it really does like plenty of sunshine.”

The Clappison family are well known in East Yorkshire for their sprouts – the 3.2 million plants that they grow annually represent 5 per cent of the UK’s crop.
