Party spirit brings neighbours together

CHILDREN in Yorkshire’s rural communities were given their first taste of the great British tradition of the street party to celebrate the Royal wedding.

More than 300 people descended on the North York Moors village of Castleton yesterday to mark the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The street party also involved residents from surrounding villages, including Danby, Ainthorpe, Westerdale and Commondale. Similar scenes were seen in Newlands Avenue in Scarborough.

Zoe Hood, who helped organised the Castleton street party, runs The Village Shop with her husband, Nick, in the High Street, which was closed for the celebrations.

Mrs Hood, who has two young daughters, Lily, eight, and Bel, four, said: “It was a great opportunity to turn back the clock to the street parties which were held to mark Charles and Diana’s wedding.

“The village was initially like a ghost town as everyone was watching the wedding at home, but people started to meet up from about 3pm.

“It was the first chance the children had to experience a street party, and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone loves a good party, and that’s what we tried to organise.”
