Party time at Piece Hall draws hundreds

Hundreds of people turned out to Halifax’s historic Piece Hall yesterday for a party held in the Queen’s honour.

Hundreds of people turned out for an afternoon’s entertainment featuring the Paradise Steel Band from Leeds and street act the Rapide Brothers.

Tables were provided and decorated for people to bring their own food while outdoor games such as skittles and giant dominoes were available for the more active visitors.

The Hall was decorated with bunting, summer music played and young and old delighted in taking part in fairground rides.

Coun Tim Swift, leader of Calderdale Council, said: “The Piece Hall has been connected with various Royal events over the years so it made sense for us to use it in this way. When I went down to have a look it looked pretty good.

“Only a few years ago the Queen was invited to Halifax for a Royal visit which was attended by hundreds of people and it just lends itself beautifully to such things.”

His colleague, Coun Barry Collins, added: “It went reasonably well; there were a lot of people there.”

Christine Middleton, who with her sister Isobel Hampson organised a craft fair for four days at the hall which finished yesterday, said: “There was a lovely atmosphere; it’s been really busy. We have had 42 stalls from across Calderdale and it has all gone really well.

“There were lots of people there. The Piece Hall looked lovely all trimmed up in bunting, it really does look a picture at such times.

“The weather was good and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.”
