Passengers to take action against holiday firm after emergency landing

HOLIDAYMAKERS are taking legal action against a travel firm after their plane made an emergency landing in Bermuda.

Smoke was reported in the cabin of a Thomas Cook Airlines flight from Cancun in Mexico to Manchester on May 1. The plane then landed so the 338 passengers could be evacuated.

Danny and Liselle McEwan, from Bircotes, Doncaster, were among those on board. They, along with a number of other passengers, have instructed Sheffield law firm Irwin Mitchell.

Mrs McEwan, who was treated by paramedics on landing in Bermuda, says that tests undertaken after her return have shown that she is suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The 33-year-old said: “About 40 minutes after take-off the seat TVs started crackling and there was a strange smell, like TCP. Soon white smoke started billowing from under one of the seats.

“I was terrified that the aircraft was going to burst into flames.”

A spokesman for Thomas Cook said: “During flight TCX149 from Cancun to Manchester a minor fault became apparent and, as a precaution and to establish the extent of the issue, the captain requested a divert into Bermuda.

“The aircraft landed safely and all passengers were looked after in hotels until the fault was fixed.”
