Patients sing praises of community nurses who care for chronic wounds

HEALTH chiefs say a community service offering care to patients with chronic wounds has been highly recommended by patients.

The nurse-led service, run by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, provides specialist treatment and advice to patients who have chronic wounds over six weeks old that are not healing or unresponsive to treatment. Chronic wounds can include leg ulcers and pressure ulcers.

A survey by NHS officials in North Lincolnshire found 90 per cent of patients would be likely to recommend the service to family and friends. Patients are seen in a variety of community clinics, including in their own home or within a residential or nursing home, and offered a full assessment, treatment and follow-up reviews. Treatments include Doppler assessments, compression bandaging and in some instances lava treatment.

Operational matron Helen Davis said: “We strive to offer the highest levels of care to our patients so it is very encouraging to hear such positive feedback.”

The majority of patients were referred to the service by their GP or by themselves, but referrals are also taken from hospital staff and district nurses.
