POLICE are stepping up patrols near an East Riding country house to try to stop a spate of vandalism.

There have been four reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage since July at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, on the outskirts of Bridlington.

The most recent incident occurred between teatime last Friday and early on Saturday morning, when vandals set fire to items on a picnic table, broke a window in the public toilets, and pulled a fence panel off a wall.

They threw signs into the llama paddock, turned benches upside down, damaged a marquee and set alight four golf flags. Small fires were lit on the bandstand.

East Riding Council estimates that damage so far has cost 2,000.

Police community support officer Beverley Feirn said: “This has caused great distress to local residents and spoils the enjoyment to people who wish to visit the area.

“The local policing team are working with the owners of the hall to help look at ways that security can be increased.”

She asked anyone with information which could help with inquiries to call Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.
