Patti Smith to perform fundraising concert for Brontë museum

ROCK legend Patti Smith is to perform a benefit concert in Haworth to raise money for the Brontë Parsonage Museum.

The New York-based singer-songwriter, known as the “Godmother of Punk”, vowed to return to Yorkshire to play a series of intimate concerts in Brontë country after visiting the Parsonage last year.

She will make good that promise when she appears in An evening of Words and Music with Patti Smith and Tony Shanahan at the Old Schoolroom in Haworth on Friday, April 19.

Museum arts officer Jenna Holmes said: “We’re delighted that Patti Smith is supporting the museum and will host this special performance in Haworth.

“It is yet another example of the ways in which the Brontës’ extraordinary legacy influences all aspects of contemporary culture. This will be a remarkable evening in a tiny venue very close to the Parsonage – we are expecting a huge response and I’m sure tickets will be snapped up very quickly indeed.”

Ms Smith burst onto the scene with her influential debut album Horses in 1975, and has recorded nine others. She has also written five books and has had her artwork exhibited across the world.

Perhaps her best-known song, Because the Night, was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 in the American chart in 1978.
