Pay switch to save council £60,000 a year

YORK could save £60,000 a year under proposals to be put to council leaders to pay nearly 1,000 staff a monthly salary rather than a weekly wage.

Council bosses have agreed the terms of the switch with union leaders and there will be a cash payment to employees to ensure the change goes smoothly.

York Council Executive members will meet on September 21 to discuss the idea designed to cut paperwork.

Most people working for York Council are paid a monthly salary but there are still 960 staff who would be affected by the switch. Most are on the lower pay scales.

Savings will come from freeing up time from completing and processing weekly timesheets.

This move will bring pay arrangements in line with all other council staff and is timetabled to take place gradually. Affected staff will be offered 100 to help with banking arrangements during the transition. Budgeting and financial management advice and support will also be offered.

The trade unions are backing the proposal and will be recommending it is accepted in a ballot to be held shortly.

Executive Member for Corporate Services Coun Richard Moore said ensuring all council staff were paid mothly was important.

He said: "Having council staff split between two different pay frequencies means we need to have two different payroll systems running. By switching everyone over to monthly pay we can save 60,000 a year."
