Pc hailed as hero over tractor drama

A police officer has been hailed as a hero for his quick thinking after jumping on a stolen tractor to prevent it from plunging downhill into a house.

Pc Adam Beecroft, pictured at the wheel of the 8.5-tonne vehicle, managed to stop the tractor as it hurtled towards parked cars and a home in Long Lane at Harden, Bingley, at 3.15pm on Saturday.

Officers spotted the tractor being driven by a man using his mobile phone and told him to pull over. But he jumped from the driver’s seat, leaving the 35,000 vehicle heading downhill at speed.

Pc Jonny Green, who was also praised, ran after the suspect while PC Beecroft chased the tractor. After jumping on board he struggled with the controls before stopping it. “It was just a relief to finally get it stopped," he said. The thief got away. Picture: Ross Parry Agency. Comment: Page 12.
