Peace movement archives on show

A COLLECTION of archives from peace activists and organisations goes on show at the University of Bradford today.

They tell the story of modern UK peace movements following a year-long project to catalogue the archives.

The PaxCat project will show over 100 collections as part of the special collections department at the university. The collections include details of the late 1950s and early 1960's nuclear disarmament campaigns of the Direct Action Committee and the Committee of 100, and the 1980s peace camps at Greenham and Molesworth.

The project received 35,000 from the National Cataloguing Grants Scheme in 2008 and now complete, the finished catalogues will appear on the Archives Hub website. Alison Cullingford, head of special collections at the university, said: "I am very proud that the collections are based at the University of Bradford. They cover over 100 metres in total and many hidden treasures were found during the catalogue period that were previously unknown."

Project archivist Helen Roberts kept a blog about the work. It can be read at www.commonwealarchives.wordpress.com
