Peak hikers raise £5,000 for charity

HIKERS who tackled a 14-mile walk over the Peak District’s toughest hills have raised almost £5,000 for the Children’s Hospital Charity in Sheffield.

More than 50 people took part in the hike from Edale to Torside, including 12 members of Team Carter which was led by Barry and Laura Whitlam, whose son Carter was born with a diaphragmatic hernia in July last year. Mr Whitlam said: “None of us expected it to be as hard as it was.

“At one point we had to cross a river that was up to our knees as all the paths were too dangerous.

“The fact it was so difficult made it all the more rewarding.”

Sean Marven, one of the surgeons who operated on Carter, also took on the challenge.

Mr Whitlam added: “Not only is he a magnificent doctor but he devotes time to raising money for the hospital as well. What an amazing man.”

Five governors from the Children’s Hospital also took part.

Simon Athey, fundraiser at the Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “They should all feel extremely proud of themselves for not only completing the walk but helping to make a real difference to our young patients.”
