MOTORISTS in Leeds face major delays as work begins to restore safety fencing on bridges along sections of the city’s inner ring road motorway.

The works are part of a programme of essential maintenance work to upgrade bridge parapets and safety fences to retaining walls on the road.

Maintenance work will take place at Woodhouse Lane, Westgate, the Wellington Street canal and river area, Ivy Street Bridge, Eastgate and Regent Street.

Leader of Leeds City Council and executive board member with responsibility for highways Coun Andrew Carter said: “We appreciate that any disruption to this busy section of road is inconvenient for road users, which is why we have chosen off-peak times for the necessary traffic restrictions to take place.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding while these essential works are taking place.”

The authority said the work, which begins this month, is expected to last for about 24 weeks.

Traffic management arrangements will be put in place while the work is being completed, including lane restrictions and occasional lane closures at off- peak times, 8pm to 5am, Monday to Saturday and at weekends 8pm Saturday to 5am Monday.

Significant maintenance work will also take place on Ivy Street Bridge, which carries the A64 dual carriageway over Ivy Street roundabout at Richmond Hill.

That includes replacing the existing steel parapets on both carriageways of the A64 with new steel ones, resurfacing the verges and footways and other general maintenance.

Traffic management arrangements will be put in place while the work is being done, including lane restrictions at off-peak times, plus occasional temporary road closures at weekends.

Vehicle, pedestrian and emergency services access through all of the above works and to adjoining properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.
