Pedestrian dies after being hit on crossing

A YOUNG woman was knocked down and killed on Saturday night while she was using a pedestrian crossing to get across a busy dual carriageway in Sheffield city centre.

The 24-year-old woman was using the crossing to make her way from the Broomhall area towards the city centre, across the Hanover Way section of the inner ring road.

The fatal collision occurred at around 10.30pm at the junction of the inner ring road with Broomspring Lane.

Two men were questioned by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said yesterday: “A black Honda Civic was travelling on Hanover Way from the Brook Hill roundabout towards the Moore Street roundabout when it collided with the woman, who was crossing the road from Broomhall towards the city centre.

“The 24-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries from the collision, coming to rest on a nearside verge.

“A 22-year-old Nottingham man and a 23-year-old Sheffield man have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“Both men were in the Civic at the time of the collision.”

The spokesman added: “Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 1410 of Saturday, November 12.”

A section of Hanover Way was closed on Saturday night and into the early hours of yesterday while police carried out their investigations.

Last night the 24-year-old dead woman still remained to be officially identified.
