Peel's son follows in father's footsteps

John Peel's son Tom Ravenscroft is to follow in his father's footsteps after landing his own BBC radio show.

The 30-year-old presenter, who like his father is a champion of new artists, will host a weekly show for 6 Music alongside figures such as Lauren Laverne and Elbow's Guy Garvey.

Peel – a legendary Radio 1 DJ for 37 years – is credited with propelling hundreds of bands to fame. He died in 2004.

Ravenscroft also DJ-ed for Channel 4 when it briefly dabbled with a radio venture before pulling the plug.

He briefly appeared on 6 Music last year standing in for Tom Robinson, but has now been given his own three-hour Friday night show starting June 4.

Ravenscroft said: "I'm thrilled that 6 Music have asked me to present a weekly show."

Another fellow 6 Music DJ Jarvis Cocker was given his big break by Ravenscroft's father when Peel championed Sheffield band Pulp.
