Pensioner with rolling pin sends burglar packing

IT’S a staple story line in an Andy Capp cartoon but getting clobbered with a rolling pin is no laughing matter, as one Yorkshire burglar has discovered.

The would-be thief was searching a house in Almondbury, Huddersfield when he had the misfortune to be confronted by a 68-year-old woman with a rolling pin and her daughter, 41, armed with a pan.

The pair were watching television on Sunday evening when they heard a noise in an upstairs bedroom.

The intruder tried to escape but only got as far as the kitchen where he was confronted by the daughter who was quickly backed up by her pensioner mother.

The tables were quickly turned as the hapless burglar became the frightened victim as he was hit over the head with a pan and then clobbered with a rolling pin.

The pair pinned him to the floor, dialled 999, and detained him until police arrived a few minutes later.

Acting Detective Inspector Ian Thornes praised the women’s actions, but warned of the dangers of tackling burglars.

“The two occupants rang 999 immediately and the police were quickly on the scene.

“It was a very brave effort by the two women and in this case had a good outcome. Both occupants are fit and well after their ordeal.

“However, we would issue cautionary advice about tackling intruders. Anyone who suspects they have an intruder in their house should ring 999 immediately.”

Yesterday a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said a 29-year-old local man was in custody on suspicion of house burglary.
